WHSLA Wind-down Wednesday for Woctober* : Mindfulness Apps

In this latest edition of the WHSLA Wind-down, Professional Development Coordinator Dora Davis provides us with a list of mindfulness and meditation apps.  Dora has personally tried these three, and here's what she had to say about them:

Headspace

For any of our Star Wars fans, I found that the HeadSpace videos on YouTube are a cute way to wind down: https://youtu.be/JVJAklXmShs

And I found an interesting video on headspace about triggering focus using music here: https://youtu.be/sY_VMjVqIj0

Headspace was my go to during the first months of Covid when they offered the service at no cost to healthcare workers.  I’m considering adding it back into my life and I was excited to see that they offer group packs!  Maybe we should start a WHSLA group? Hahaha

UCLA Mindful

This is a free app and they also have free studio recorded guided meditations.  Another great plus is that they have them available in Spanish. I’ve not personally used those but I have heard feedback from some of my loved ones that it is extremely helpful.

More information about this is available here: https://www.uclahealth.org/marc/mindful-meditations

Mindfulness Coach

This is another free app and it comes from the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs.  It leads you through mindfulness in a gradual way as you adopt simple practices and build on them.  The mindfulness assessment is a nice feature that allows you to track your progress.

If you have used any of these or have other mindfulness apps you'd like to recommend, please let us know in the comments!

I'm struggling to find a good image for "mindfulness"
so instead, here's a weird cat photo I found
in NLM's digital collection

October is National Medical Librarians Month 2022

Graphic from The Medical Library Association.

October is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the contributions of Medical and Health Science Librarians (That's us!) who continue to provide specialized library support to physicians, nurses, students, healthcare professionals, patients and consumers wherever we work.

This year’s theme is, Make better decisions faster: Consult your health information professional.

What are you doing to celebrate?  Leave a comment and let us know ...
