Free Webinar: Introducing: Systematic Search Practice Sets [July 27]

Sharing in case any WHSLA Members are interested.

I've attended at least 1 other session by this group of librarians and they have all been excellent webinars.

Even if you are not doing systematic reviews (SRs), you can still learn a lot by hearing from those who do, gleaning tidbits/takeaways related to resources and search techniques can be applied to your own practice.

Introducing: Systematic Search Practice Sets

Informationists at the University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences Library created the "Systematic Search Practice Sets" site as a place to help information professionals bridge the experience gap between systematic search training sessions and engagement in a real live evidence synthesis project. While we all learn "on the job", it can be challenging to find ways to practice systematic searching in an asynchronous, instant feedback, self-driven format with lower stakes than an active evidence synthesis project.

This webinar will start with an overview of search lessons learned over a decade of teaching the U-M "Systematic Reviews for Librarians" workshop, and then introduce participants to the "Systematic Search Practice Sets" open Canvas site.

The link to the "Systematic Search Practice Sets" site will be available on the event page (https://guides.lib.umich.edu/TaubmanTalks/PracticeSets) immediately prior to the webinar, and will also be distributed during the webinar presentation.

This FREE webinar will be held Thursday, July 27, noon-1:00pm EST. A recording will be available after the event. To find out more and get the Zoom link, please visit: https://guides.lib.umich.edu/TaubmanTalks/PracticeSets

Docline News: Adding Your Library Hours

DOCLINE is the National Library of Medicine's interlibrary loan (ILL) request routing system. The purpose of the system is to improve access to biomedical literature for libraries in the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) and beyond.

DOCLINE has added the ability to input your library's hours of operation.

* Libraries can add their hours including time zone to their 'Manage Library >> library schedule'
* Applies only to US/CA libraries
* Time zones default to UTC, will need to be updated by libraries

To update your library schedule in DOCLINE, please follow these steps:
1. Log in to your DOCLINE account using your credentials.
2. Navigate to the "Library Schedule" section.
3. Review your current schedule and identify any gaps or outdated information.
4. Add new hours or make necessary changes to ensure accurate representation of your library's availability.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please reach out to NLM by using the "Contact Us" feature within the DOCLINE system, or by sending an email to mailto:custserv@nlm.nih.gov.

Thank you,
-DOCLINE Team

Create Effective Data Visualizations - NNLM Webinar

Create Effective Data Visualizations

The NNLM has offered a number of excellent webinars recently.  Here's another one on data viz for those of you who are so inclined.

I was particularly happy to hear them say, "Forget Pie Charts!"

Instructors: Katie Pierce FarrierElizabeth Roth

Data visualization is a key part of communicating information. Learn about common types of visualizations and how to use them to meet the information needs of your audience. This class will give examples of different chart types and will discuss common pitfalls when creating visualizations. Lastly, instructors will use example datasets to demonstrate creating visualizations in Tableau Public.

Objectives:

    1. Identify common types of data and their uses.
    2. Determine strengths and weaknesses of example data visualizations
    3. Use Tableau Public to create data visualizations.

Is Seeing Really Believing? Visual Health Misinformation (NNLM Webinar)

Is Seeing Really Believing? Visual Health Misinformation (NNLM Webinar)

Presenters: Kelsey Cowles, Rachel Suppok, and Rebekah Miller, Research & Instruction Librarians at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System

Discussions of health literacy and health misinformation frequently focus on the analysis and fact-checking of written materials. However, research has shown that visuals can be even more convincing than text-based information and can shape how text-based information is perceived. Identifying misleading visualizations and imagery is therefore a vital skill for navigating the current health information landscape.

This interactive session will illustrate the pervasive nature of this issue and introduce attendees to a wide range of deceptive visual communications ranging from misleading graphs to manipulated images in scientific publications to AI-generated deepfakes.

Attendees will gain confidence in analyzing various types of visual information and leave the session with practical ideas for incorporating these skills into programming in a variety of contexts.

The goals of this webinar are to:

  • Describe the importance of visual health info literacy
  • Identify misleading visual communication or out-of-context imagery in both general and academic settings
  • Recognize how manipulation of visuals can alter the message conveyed by the media
People are more likely to believe a statement when accompanied by an image
Images are more likely to be remembered than words
Photos increase likes/shares on social media

The technology is constantly improving, so the tells that help us identify deepfakes will likely disappear soon, esp. some of the more obvious ones.  This is where context is important: Would the person say / do that in real life?

Practice what you've learned:

Beyond the Binary: Understanding LGBTQIA+ Health (NNLM Webinar)

Beyond the Binary: Understanding LGBTQA+ Health (NNLM Webinar)

The class provides culturally appropriate health information and resources for LGBTQIA+ populations and the librarians and health care practitioners who support them. We have done our best to use culturally sensitive language and examples recognizing that language on this topic, like gender and sexuality, can be fluid.  Providing access to health information for and about these populations is extremely important.

The topic of gender and LGBTQIA+ issues may be sensitive for some. Social stigma, fear, or rejection is real for many people. It is essential to bring awareness to these issues and create practices around addressing them. This class connects with NNLM initiatives addressing Environmental Determinants of Health and Confronting Health Misinformation.

Objectives:
  1. List 2 resources for LGBTQIA+ terminology
  2. Identify 2 sources of LGBTQIA+ inclusive health information
  3. Discuss strategies for providing a welcoming environment for the LGBTQIA+ community

Recommended Resources from the class handout:

Provides glossary of terms, some of which include videos of people who identify with the term defined.

Provides education, support and suicide prevention services and educational resources for and about LGBTQIA+ youth.

UC Davis LGBTQIA Center Glossary

Provides free downloadable training materials for anyone who wants to offer an LGBTQIA+ training and awareness in their school, library or any group.

From MLA23: Clinically Useful Journals Subset and How You can Use It to Limit PubMed Search Results to the Most Clinically Relevant Citations

In 2020, PubMed eliminated the AIM / Core Clinical Journals subset / filter because it had not been reviewed or updated in a very long time.  The Abridged Index Medicus (AIM) was the list of journals covered in the  hardcopy publication “Abridged Index Medicus”, which ceased with the December 1997 issue.  Until early 2020, the AIM  journal list was also used online as a search subset limit or filter called "Core Clinical Journals" in PubMed.

For those of us who frequently search PubMed, this should have been a handy filter to limit search results to be more useful and practical for Clinicians taking care of patients with common health conditions.  However, because the journal subset had not been updated in many years, its utility was limited.

research study showed that

  • only 30% of clinically-used articles were from the 50- year-old Core Clinical Journals filter and
  • only 16% of clinically-used journals were represented in Core titles

The list desperately needed an update.

Fortunately, Michele Klein-Fedyshin and a team of Health Science Librarians (along with a statistician) worked to update the list using current best evidence and real world clinical usage data.  With their careful analysis, some titles fell off the list; Others were added covering entirely new medical specialties (gastroenterology, urology, etc.) not recognized in the old core journals list.

And thus was born: The Clinically Useful Journals List

PubMed declined to officially implement this updated filter, saying that it needs to be continuously reviewed and updated for NLM to adopt it.  But there is another option:

Similar to NLM's DIY workaround for the retired Nursing Journals Filter, individuals can save the following search strategy in MyNCBI and apply it when needed.

Watch the video on How to Save PubMed Searches to learn how to save and maintain your own topic-specific PubMed searches.    Copy and paste the strategy below ...

You only need to copy and save this search strategy once in your MyNCBI in order to pull it up again in future when you need it.

From MLA 23: Docline Spring Cleaning Checklist

One of the most practical things I saw at the virtual MLA23 conference was a poster by Jill Daby, MLS, AHIP, and Margot Malachowski, MLS, AHIP, highlighting recommended best practices for libraries using the DOCLINE ILL system, including regular upkeep of a library's journal holdings and schedule, and steps to follow when a library closes (temporarily or permanently).

The poster shared data from the last two years from one rural library, demonstrating the impact of outdated library holdings: 138 unreceipted and unfilled requests. Multiply routing inefficiency across the 1500+ libraries currently using DOCLINE, and the effects are felt nationwide. Delayed and/or unfilled requests for biomedical information for our health care providers have the potential to impact patient care in every organization.

At the suggestion of colleagues, the authors offered to share their poster and the "Spring Cleaning" checklist far and wide to raise awareness about this issue and encourage action.
  • Please remember, DOCLINE requires a commitment to participate from the eligible libraries who use it. By maintaining our library profiles, DOCLINE can continue to fulfill its purpose since it's inception in 1985 of "increasing the speed and efficiency of biomedical ILL."
  • Improving access to biomedical information changes patient lives.
  • In addition, ensuring prompt delivery supports the services our colleagues offer their institutions - advocacy for the profession.
