Unacceptable Risk [Documentary]
I watched the NNLM webinar this week on Environmental Chemicals and Breast Cancer. The speaker, Dr. Julia Brody, from The Silent Spring Institute mentioned this short documentary with Dr. Margaret Kripke.
Here are 4 things that jumped out at me as "Wow! Really?" moments:
1) Chemicals in the US are not tested before being put on the market. The US regulates chemicals only AFTER evidence of harm. Other countries require proof of safety prior to release. The FDA only covers food and drugs, not all the other chemicals in the US (insecticides, herbicides, cleaning products, etc.)
2) Known carcinogens are NOT regulated in the US.
3) Regulations are not enforced.
4) Prevention is easier than curing cancer, but there is little to no government money to research environmental carcinogens, and certainly no industry money.
