Free NNLM CE: Telehealth 101: What libraries need to know

Please join NNLM beginning September 2, 2025 through September 30, 2025 for a 3-hour MLA CE class called Telehealth 101: What libraries need to know.

This is a work at your own pace class during the scheduled dates.

Libraries across the United States are beginning to offer their patrons access to telehealth services as a strategy for addressing inequities in digital access to healthcare. This class introduces Telehealth, why it's important, and how it enables people to have greater access to quality healthcare.

This class will also address privacy and ethical concerns, and review the technology and infrastructure needed to launch a successful telehealth program in your library.

The class consists of three modules:

* Recognize the different approaches/models to providing telehealth access within libraries.
* Describe resources available to the library for Telehealth technology and the role of the library in support of digital skills training for telehealth.
* Address potential ethical and legal concerns in offering telehealth access within libraries.

MLA Webinar: Using EndNote for Librarian-Mediated Systematic Review Searches

New Year's Resolutions & Professional Development

If you’re like many people, the new year is a great time to refocus and recharge.  Many of us like to make New Year’s resolutions but if you’re like me, at this mid-point in the month your steam is starting to give out to the pressures of home, work, family etc.  One resolution I’ve set for myself is to try to do at least one “official” professional development activity every month.  What better way to do that than to attend one of MLAs webinars, sponsored by Region 6?

 

I know some of you may be thinking that this is cheating because I’m the Professional Development Coordinator but the truth is, I haven’t found the latest MLA offerings pertinent to my super limited job as a hospital librarian.  But then a few months ago, I happened to be free and online when one of the systematic review webinars was about to start and though I don’t work on these at all in my role, I decided to log on and watch rather than continue binge watching whatever I was watching at the time.  (Right now it’s Home on Apple TV if you ‘re interested.)  So I fired up the systematic review webinar and then watched and marveled as I learned so much that I could apply to my job:  

• I learned about being an advocate for myself and my skills, 
• I got a refresher on Prospero 
• and at the end of the webinar I had more than a few ideas jotted down to apply to my current position. 

Now unless I leave my organization I don’t anticipate ever working on a systematic review, however I still feel that the 90 minutes I spent in that webinar was value added to my current role.  So I will watch a webinar or attend a professional development activity every month, even if it’s a past webinar and I can’t claim credit.  (And if you’re interested in watching past webinars, I know a girl who can help with that…me!)

 

On the non-professional side of resolutions, I am making reading-for-pleasure a priority this year.  My goal is to read 75 books.  I’m on book 4 so wish me luck with that one!

Enter to Win one of two $500 WHSLA Professional Development Awards

From WHSLA Professional Development Coordinator Dora Davis: 

In order to support the professional development of its members, WHSLA is offering two $500 awards to eligible WHSLA members.  The recipients of these awards will be chosen by a drawing.  If you are interested in submitting your name for the drawing, please send me an email with your name, institution, email and phone number by May 1.

 

New this year, the awards can be used by a member in good standing for either continuing education, conference costs or towards AHIP membership.  If the award recipient chooses to use some or all the award toward continuing education or conference costs, such as registration, travel, lodging and meals, they would be required to share the information learned with WHSLA’s membership.  If the recipient elects to use some of the award toward and AHIP membership, the recipient would be required to run for an elected WHSLA office in the next two years.  It would be expected that if the recipient only uses their award toward AHIP membership, they will only accept the amount needed for AHIP membership and will not accept the remainder of the $500 award. 

 

The awards are available to members in good standing and they will be chosen at random from a drawing of interested and eligible candidates.  Previous award winners are ineligible if it has been less than three years since their award.  If you previously won an award but did not complete your sharing award you are also ineligible.

 

Final notes

 

• Sharing can be done through a blog post on the WHSLA Blog, during a WHSLA Chat Session or by other means.
• Requirements for eligibility:

• Active WHSLA member and current on dues. (Not current? You can easily pay your dues online via PayPal!)

• Expenses must take place in 2021.
• Willingness to share your learnings with WHSLA members within 3 months after the chosen conference.
• Willingness to run for office in the next 2 years if using stiped for AHIP membership.
• Have not won the travel stipend drawing in the past three years.
